The reasons the company gives

The company's own explanation, not something inferred from the numbers.

Operating income increased due to higher naphtha prices and overseas market prices for major products amid heightened tensions in the Middle East, higher selling prices resulting from the weaker yen, an improvement in inventory valuation effects accompanying the rise in naphtha prices, and increased shipments of value-added materials and high-performance materials. Ordinary income also benefited from improved non-operating income and expenses due to the recognition of foreign exchange gains.
