The reasons the company gives
The company's own explanation, not something inferred from the numbers.Net sales decreased primarily because selling prices declined in line with lower naphtha prices and weaker overseas market conditions for major products. Operating income decreased despite higher engineering business sales and improved terms of trade resulting from lower raw material and fuel prices, due to a deterioration in inventory valuation differences and higher fixed costs. Ordinary income increased as non-operating income and expenses improved following the recognition of foreign exchange gains. Net income attributable to owners of the parent decreased because of an impairment loss on fixed assets at TOSOH SMD, Inc. The forecast for the next fiscal year remains undetermined because production plans, raw material and fuel costs, and demand are subject to numerous uncertainties stemming from the worsening situation in the Middle East, making a reasonable estimate difficult.
