The reasons the company gives
The company's own explanation, not something inferred from the numbers. In Japan, higher average spend per customer following product price revisions and a steady trend in customer numbers, and overseas, growth in mainland China, drove revenue and profit growth. For operating profit, the positive impact of higher revenue exceeded the decline in gross margin caused by surging precious metal prices, while increases in personnel expenses and selling, general and administrative expenses were contained through productivity improvements. The effects of product price revisions and cost improvement measures also emerged in the fourth quarter.
