The reasons the company gives
The company's own explanation, not something inferred from the numbers.Net sales declined because replacement demand remained sluggish as user companies became more cost-conscious amid rising prices, and sales opportunities were lost due to stockouts. Operating profit increased as control of selling, general and administrative expenses more than offset the decline in gross profit accompanying the decrease in net sales. Ordinary profit increased mainly due to the recognition of gains on the valuation of derivatives related to forward foreign exchange transactions.
