The narrower it becomes toward the bottom, the smaller the proportion of revenue that remains as profit. The smooth progress of project-based contracts, the launch of operations at newly contracted SPD facilities, expansion of services at existing facilities, the introduction of fully prepared foods, small-scale M&A and new store openings contributed to higher revenue and profit. These gains were partly offset by lower demand for equipment renewals, the deferral of price negotiations with manufacturers to the following quarter and beyond, higher business operating costs due to inflation and other factors, revisions to pharmacy reimbursement rates, and a decline in prescription volumes due to the low level of infectious disease activity.

The reasons the company gives
The company's own explanation, not something inferred from the numbers.Net sales remained firm and, as measures to improve profitability in each business progressed, results were generally in line with plan. By business, revenue and profit were supported by the launch of operations at newly contracted SPD facilities, expansion of services at contracted facilities, small-scale M&A, new store openings and the introduction of fully prepared foods. These gains were partly offset by lower demand for equipment renewals, the deferral of price negotiations to the following quarter and beyond, higher costs, and the low level of infectious disease activity.
