The narrower it becomes toward the bottom, the smaller the proportion of revenue that remains as profit. Revenue increased mainly due to higher shipments resulting from strengthened U.S. production capacity in the overseas flour milling business and the effects of foreign-currency translation. Despite higher shipments in the overseas flour milling business and other operations, operating income and ordinary income declined due to lower sales in the prepared foods and delicatessen business, the absence of the previous year's large-scale construction projects, and higher costs attributable to the situation in the Middle East. Net income declined mainly because gains on the sale of policy-held shares were lower than in the previous year.
